Final Project Progress (or Lack Thereof)

I wanted to choose this prompt for my blog post this week because, honestly, I have basically not started my final project. I chose the topic very early in this quarter, choosing a printing press to research, but after that I haven't actually done any research yet. I was a part of the Grenville group, so that project became my central focus, and the final project kind of got pushed to the side. I know getting started is the hardest part, but it is feeling particularly hard right now.

If anyone who has dove into research has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated! For example, I know Michelle suggested meeting with Kelci to find resources. Has anyone done this? Did you have to come prepared with any prior knowledge or would this be a good starting point? Has most of your research been on databases so far? Any other general tips?

  1. I can relate, Casi. I have very little done for my final project- basically no research. I think it was last quarter that you actually mentioned finding one source a day for the final to make the load easier over time. I think that your advice helped me last quarter, so I am trying to do the same thing this quarter! (Maybe not one a day- but one source every few days.) I think that is our best bet for getting some of the difficult work done earlier on! I think you just have to try doing that again- I am sure you will do great and I am looking forward to seeing another awesome project from you. :D

  2. Hi Cassi! You are not alone in this - I have made basically no progress on my project. I agree that the hardest part is getting started. Right now, it seems kind of daunting to start a whole new research project. Also, since the project isn't due for a while it kind of just feels like something that can wait until later. This blog prompt has been a good nudge for me to get started. You got this and I'm excited to see your final result. Good luck!!

  3. Hey Cassi! I know what you mean. For the first few weeks of this quarter I was pretty much solely focused on the Grenville group project than I was on the final. Getting started so far has been the hardest part (besides finding clear sources), but once you get started you'll find the information to be interesting. I too am doing the printing press option for my final project and, once I found my first article, I have actually found it to be incredibly interesting.
I have a scheduled appointment with Kelci next week to discuss my particular printing press, but going into it, I plan on just asking her if there is any general information she knows about my printing press, some specific questions I have regarding the press that I found after doing some research, and asking if the SCU Archives and Special Collections have anything that was printed using my specific press. In addition, I found searching on the internet for any information a big help as well.
    Good luck on your project!

  4. Hi Cassi! I find your blog post to be very relatable. I am in the same boat; I have yet to start research for my project other than just having a solid plan for what I want to do. I think it's very understandable how you have been prioritizing your work. My advice would be to maybe consider carving out an hour to do research at least everyday. That way you will feel less overwhelmed about the whole project.

  5. Don't worry, I am in the same place. Our Grenville project took up most of my time during the first few weeks of class, so I have not really started research. Beyond choosing a topic, I have not done much. However, there is still a lot of time left in the quarter to work on the project, and I'm sure once I get started it will become less convoluted. Good luck!

  6. Hey Cassi! I'm even farther behind if that makes you feel any better. I keep feeling like I have more pressing due dates and therefore I'm struggling to find the motivation to put the final project over homework due for any given week. Maybe doing just 30 minutes every other day or some kind of relaxed but consistent schedule would help me with that.

  7. Hey Cassi, I'm on the same page as you. Being in the Grenville group, I also didn't have much of a chance to get a head start on the project. I'm glad that you have a topic chosen already and seem to have some interest in it. I am also curious if anyone has met with Kelsi yet and if that was helpful. I plan on using ebscohost database to do my research.
