Your Guys' Research Excursions!
While all of your research excursions look fabulous, the first one that caught my eye was Griffin's presentation on women in the afterlife. I thought it was a very interesting topic, especially since it was something that didn't even cross my mind when I was reading. I had thought about the role of women, as it seemed to be a pretty central theme in the novel, and I had briefly considered the afterlife as far as Parvaiz was concerned, but I never thought of the overlap between the two concepts. I thought it was super interesting to learn about how the women's treatment in the afterlife should be equitable to men's, despite the current social division we see in our realm. I would definitely check this out if you guys haven't already!
The second one I looked at was Hilary's essay on sexual expectations. I remember reading Hilary's blog post about her considering this topic, so I was looking forward to hearing about it! It was such an interesting read! I loved how she contrasted Isma and Aneeka's relationships surrounding sex and intimacy, and then connected it back to the standard for Muslim women. After reading, I am curious to know more about how exactly modern Muslim women are fighting back against these standards.
The last one I chose to read was Monique's essay on the Morality Police, since that is also what I researched. I loved reading this because Monique took a much more historical approach than I did! Even though we researched the same topic, mine focused more on what effect they had, while Monique's taught me a lot about their origins and how they came to be. I thought it was interesting how much Western politics played into the role of morality police, and I am glad Monique brought this to light!
Hey Cassi! I, too, definitely want to read Griffin's research excursion; that never crossed my mind either and I'm interested to see how much he could really dive into the topic. These comments are very thoughtful on their excursions and I like how you read Monique's with the same topic as yours to compare and contrast. Maybe, I'll read both of yours and try to find differences myself.
ReplyDeleteHi Cassi! Wow, Griffin's idea also never crossed my mind! I will totally look at it soon! I have never really thought about how people view afterlife in general (but that may be because I am not very religious), so I'm excited to learn more about people's view on afterlife and how afterlife differs between men and women. Also, I'm glad that you also enjoyed my research excursion! I want to check out both yours and Monique's projects and see the differences and similarities and how they might add on to each other now!
ReplyDeleteHello Cassi! I didn't get to read Griffin's research excursion but I did find it interesting what you had to say about the equality in the afterlife. I definitely think I will go back a read what he had to say. I also read Hilary's research excursion and I too found the who women's different aspects on sexual intimacy interesting. I a grateful that you were able to get something out of my essay and I plan to go back and read what you focused on in the morality police.
ReplyDeleteHey Cassi! I like that you focused on Monique's topic since it was similar to your own. I listened to your podcast as well so I agree that Monique took a more historical approach. I'm surprised as well to learn that the Morality Police had its origins from western politics.
ReplyDeleteHi Cassi, Hillary's research on sexual norms in Muslim communities was something I also found interesting. One implication from the essay that I disagree with is that Islam creates a misogynistic social standard on Muslim woman having sex. This social standard is unfortunately present in almost every community in the world and according to Islamic law both men and woman are to refrain from having sex, even though this law is not always followed.
ReplyDeleteHey Cassi, I did get to see Griffin's research excursion and I agree it was a super interesting take! I loved the connection he made, especially since I had never really thought of those two subjects overlapping as I was reading the text. I also really enjoyed Monique's essay, and I agree, it had lots of good background info on the topic!
ReplyDeleteOne of the great things about reading multiple research excursions is that you can see how a difference in sources results in different information about the same topic--and that different questions or entry points result in different sources...
ReplyDeleteHi Cassi! I also found Monique's historical approach to the morality police super interesting! I really enjoyed seeing how you guys used different mediums to present your research. It was really helpful to see both the origins of the morality police and how it impacts people in the modern world.
