My Research Interests in Home Fire

So far, there is a lot that has interested me in Home Fire. Coming from a largely white Christian neighborhood, I do not have a lot of knowledge about Islamic culture or practices. This has made a lot of this book very enriching and sparked a lot of different curiosities as we read.

I enjoyed learning about the various cultural clothing, prayer practices, and values. I think many of these could be interesting starting points for a research excursion. However, while these topics are very interesting, I am interested in finding something that has a little bit more relevance to my life today.

Tuesday, I was listening to that morning's episode of "The Daily," a news podcast by the New York Times released each day. It is one of my favorite ways to wake up and start the day off right. On Tuesday, they were talking about the current events surrounding woman's protests in Iran. A large part of the podcast was the morality police, which I recognized from reading Home Fire. I think this is something that could be very interesting to look into, especially with its relevance to today.

I am curious how the morality police began, what exact rules they enforce, and what the public opinion of these figures have been over time. I think they add an interesting element to Home Fire, and I am curious to learn more about them.

  1. I personally have not had that much experience with other religions beyond Christianity as well. This book as left me with a lot of interest in the Islamic culture as well as the Muslim traditions. I was having similar thoughts and wondering what exactly the morality police is and how they they play a role in Islamic culture. I can't wait to see your excursion!

  2. Hi Cassi!

I can relate to not knowing much about Islamic culture or practices too and how Home Fire has been extremely informative about Islamic culture and practices. Though I have previously heard about the morality police, I also don't know much about how they operate or how people living with them think of them. I'm excited to see what you learn about the morality police and what you share with the class!

  3. Hey Cassi! I really connected with your thoughts on how Home Fire exposed readers to a new world of terms, traditions, and beliefs. When I read about the morality police, I was also confused on their purpose and roles. I mean, isn't it the job of regular law enforcement to uphold the morals of society? I cannot wait to read your research paper and learn more about the institution!

  4. Hi Cassi! I haven't had much experiences with Islamic culture either as I grew up in a similar community. Listening to this podcast every morning is a really cool idea that definetly will help expand your world knowledge. Maybe I will start doing this too! It's really cool that you connected something from the podcast to another in Home Fire. This topic seems really interesting and one that is even still relevant today.

  5. Hey Cassi! I also don't feel that I've gotten the opportunity to be surrounded by Islamic culture, but I would love to learn more! I'm sure that it'll be fascinating to see how religion interacts with politics in Iran. I think that it's super important to stay informed about the experience of women around the world and wish you the best on your research excursion!
